From the Pastor's Desk
"And a little child shall lead them." Isaiah11:6
I have to share two very moving stories with you. I love true stories and I love them even more when I can
tell them about the young people in our parishes.A young boy recently received a dollar bill because his pastor had a "senior moment" and called
him by the wrong name. Eric was reluctant to take the dollar bill but the pastor insisted and he put the dollar in his pocket. That afternoon, after attending a Red Sox Game in Boston with his dad and younger brother, the young boy saw a homeless person on the street outside of Fenway Park. A light went off in Eric’s head and he immediately reached into his pocket, removed the dollar bill and placed it in the hand of the man begging by the side of the road.Monday morning, after celebrating the 9:00 a.m. Mass, I went to
the sacristy to take off my vestments and found a drawing, a note and an
envelope on the counter. The picture was of me saying Mass and was drawn by a
budding artist in our parish named Jason. The note and the envelope came from
his older brother, a second grader who recently received his First Communion in
one of our churches. In the note, Michael thanked me for celebrating his First
Communion Mass and told me how special the day was for him. When I opened the
envelope it contained $167.57 in cash! His mother told me that Michael wanted me
to donate this money to our Annual Partners in Charity Appeal. The little boy
had heard me speak of the Appeal last Sunday at the 8:30 Mass and when he got
home he asked his parents if he could give half of his First Communion money to
help some poor children in our Diocese!
We all would rather
see a homily than hear one.Thank you Eric and Michael for showing us a
homily we won’t forget….
...and Jason thank you for the picture I can hang
on my refrigerator!
The picture and the example of the boys remind
all of us that we must
"become what we eat."
